Chatino Plantain (Tostón)
Bananas are a fundamental component in Cuban cuisine, finding their way into countless recipes. Tostónes or chatinos are no exception, offering a delightful and easy-to-prepare appetizer or side dish that showcases the versatility of this beloved ingredient.
Ingredients
- 4 green plantains
- vegetable oil for frynig
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Wash and peel your plantains and slice your plantain into chunky bits.
- Prepare a wide frying pan and add about 1 inch/ 2 ½ cm of vegetable oil. Place on medium heat until hot.
- Fry the plantain pieces for around 3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
- Transfer the plantain onto a kitchen paper-lined dish to soak up the excess oil. Allow them to cool a little bit.
- Now place the fried plantain pieces on a cutting board and, using the flat bottom of a sturdy glass or a bowl, press down gently on the top of each piece, until flattened. Don't press so hard it will stick to the chopping board, just enough to flatten it.
- Once you've flattened them, return reheat the oil and fry the pieces again for about a minute on each side, until beautifully browned.
- Transfer the delicious Tostón pieces onto a separate dish and season with salt to taste.
Enjoy!
