Koulourakia – Greek Easter Cookies
For all homemade cookie lovers, this is a delicious traditional Greek dessert. These traditional Greek cookies are very chewy and flavorful, and go perfectly with a cup of milk or for your coffee break.
And since there are never enough cookies in my house, I make double portions. Enjoy!
Koulourakia – Greek Easter Cookies

- 280 g flour
- ⅓ tsp salt
- 90 g sugar
- 4 tbsp sour cream
- 120 g butter
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 tsp vanilla sugar
- grated zest of 1 lemon
- grated zest of 1 orange
Instructions
How to make Koulourakia – Greek Easter Cookies:
- Wash the lemon and orange well. Finely grate the peel of the fruit and mix it with the flour and salt.
- Mix the soft butter at room temperature with the sugar and vanilla sugar.
- Add the egg yolks one at a time and mix well after each addition.
- Add the 4 tablespoons of cream and mix gently.
- Add the flour gradually, in several batches, and mix slowly after each addition. You should get a slightly soft dough, which will harden in the refrigerator.
- Wrap the dough in foil and chill for an hour.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C (355 Fahrenheit) and line a large baking tray with baking paper.
- Remove the dough from the refrigerator and place it on a well floured work surface.
- Cut the dough into 24 approximately equal pieces.
- Form each piece into a 20cm (approx. 7.8 inch) long strand.
- Join the ends of the strand and then twist it to make a braid.
- Place all the biscuits in the baking tray and bake in the oven for 18-20 minutes until lightly browned.
- Remove and leave to cool, then sprinkle with plenty of sugar.
- They are more than delicious!
