Ingredients
- 500 g potatoes peeled and washed
- 1 ½ lb ground beef
- 2 large onions peeled and sliced
- 1/2 cup water
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
- butter for frying
For the sauce:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp flour
- 1 ½ cup beef stock
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
- a dash of brown food coloring (optional)
To serve (optional):
- pickled gerkins
- pickled beets
Instructions
- Bring the minced meat to room temperature before beginning.
- Place the potatoes into a pot and cover with water. Add salt and place on high heat to bring the water to a boil. Lower the heat slightly and cook the potatoes for around 20 minutes until fork-tender.
- Divide the minced meat into 4. Shape each portion into 4 flat meat patties and season them well with salt and pepper. Fry the hamburger patties in a knob or two of melted butter on both sides ( about 5-10 minutes per side, depending on how thick your patties are).
- Place a little butter in a pan over medium heat until melted and sauté the onions. Add a the water after about a minute and continue cooking until the water evaporates and the onion softens (about 15 minutes).
- To prepare the sauce, melt the butter in the pan where the meat has fried and add the flour. Whisk them together for a couple of minutes to homogenize, add the beef stock and season well with salt and pepper. You can add a bit of brown food coloring at this point if you want to darken the colour of the sauce. Let the sauce cook until it thickens into a gravy.
- When the potatoes are done boiling, drain away the water and toss then with some butter.
- Divide the hamburger patties between 4 plates and top with onions and a drizzle of sauce. Serve with buttery boiled potatoes on the side and pickled gerkins.
Enjoy!
