Bouyourdi: Spicy Baked Feta with Tomatoes and Peppers

Bouyourdi is a classic Greek baked appetizer made with ripe tomatoes, sweet peppers, spicy chili, and creamy feta, all finished with olive oil and oregano. Served hot and bubbling, it’s a bold, rustic meze designed for sharing with warm pita or crusty bread.

Ingredients
 
 

  • 1 Florina pepper (or red bell pepper) cut into thin strips
  • 1 green hot-pepper sliced
  • 1 tomato sliced
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 250 g feta cheese crumbled
  • dried oregano
  • salt
  • pepper
  • extra virgin olive oil for drizzling

To serve (optional):

  • pita bread

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven over 210 °C/410°F, with top-bottom heat.
  • Pour some olive oil in a clay pot, spread some peppers in the pot, top with tomato slices and add some salt.
  • Then, sprinkle on the feta cheese, some dried oregano, the crushed red pepper and some olive oil.
  • Repeat the process with another layer of ingredients in the same order.
  • Cook the bouyourdi in the oven for 10–15 minutes, until the feta is soft and lightly golden.
  • Serve the bouyourdi hot, along with fresh pita bread. Enjoy!
