Directions
Šišky S Mákem is potato cones with poppy seeds, a traditional Czech sweet dish popular mainly among children. And even though you probably won’t impress your hungry Czech husband with this one, Czech kids will love you for serving this at home. And it doesn’t even take long to prepare.
The cones are made from dough made with boiled potatoes, rolled by hand into cute-looking šišky, and then topped with melted butter and a mixture of icing sugar and poppy seeds.
Preparation:
1. Boil the potatoes, peel them and grate them in a bowl on a grater. Grind the poppies on a poppy grinder. Melt the butter in a small saucepan. Before preparing the dough, we also place a large pot with lightly salted water on the stove, which we bring to a boil. It is important that we have boiling water ready at the exact moment when the cones are finished, so that they do not stand unnecessarily.
2. Add egg yolks, flour and semolina to the potato bowl. Mix the dough and adjust the amount of flour according to the consistency, which always depends on the age and type of potatoes. The dough should be pliable and should not stick. If we want to be sure, we can cook a small piece of dough in advance and adjust the ratio accordingly.
3. Sprinkle the work surface with flour. We form two longer rollers from the dough and gradually cut out small pieces from them, which we roll out with our palms into small cones about 5 cm in length and about 1 cm in diameter.
