Directions
Halo halo is a shaved ice dessert from the Philippines. The term halo-halo literally means mix-mix and describes the colorful mélange of ingredients in this dessert. The layers usually have sweetened beans, coconut jam, palm fruit, shaved ice, more sweetened fruit, ledge flan or milk flan, purple yam jam, purple yam ice cream, ripe jackfruit and is drenched in evaporated milk.
This dessert is very popular during the summer. Vendors often sell halo halo in the side-streets. The ingredients are kept in glass jars and placed on top of a small wooden or plastic table.
They are 2 Ways to Make Halo Halo:
Recipe #1:
- Prepare 4 halo halo crystal glasses. Arrange all ingredient into 4 equal parts for each serving glass.
- Add 2 tablespoons of each ingredient, layer by layer starting with red mung beans, sweetened camote, white beans, langka, bananas, sago, and gelatin.
- Top with 1/2 cup shaved ice.
- Pour 1/4 cup milk over the shaved ice and top with a scoop of ice cream, topped with macapuno, a small slice of leche flan and ube halaya on the rim. Serve with a crispy wafer stick.
- Lastly, sprinkle pinipig or rice krispies on top to garnish.
Recipe #2:
- Using a large ice cream bowl, arrange the following ingredients: sweet palm fruit, sweetened coconut meat, boiled red mung beans and sweetened jackfruit.
- You may also add sweet white beans, colorful gelatins, sliced banana, and jelly pearls.
- Then fill your bowl with crushed or shaved ice, and pour in the evaporated milk. Add 1 tablespoon of ube or purple yam and a slice of leche flan on the side. Place one scoop of ube ice cream in the center, sprinkle a pinch of pinipig on the top to add a hint of flavor. Serve it right away. Enjoy!
TIP: When eating halo halo, gently dig the shaved ice using a spoon and mix everything together until the ice melts and all the flavors are combined. Indulge!
