Hawaiian macaroni salad is pretty much just macaroni, carrot, mayonnaise, and salt and pepper. There are a few other ingredients you can add like celery, extra onion, potatoes, fresh crab, or relish, but the basic recipe is my favorite. It’s a filling and inexpensive dish that is easy to make and is often served as a lunchtime side.

How to Make Authentic Hawaiian Macaroni Salad:

    1. Cook the macaroni according to the directions on the packet.
    2. Drain well and place the macaroni in a large bowl.
    3. While the macaroni is still hot, sprinkle on the vinegar and add the carrot and onion.
    4. Toss together until well combined. Refrigerate for 15 minutes, or until cooled.
    5. In a separate, smaller bowl, whisk together the mayo, milk, and sugar.
    6. Fold the mayo mixture into the macaroni until all the noodles are evenly coated.
    7. Add salt and pepper to taste.
    8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (best overnight).
    9. Gently stir before serving, adding a little more milk if needed, no more than a tablespoon or two.
