Spices

Spices are the aromatic parts of plants, such as roots, flowers, fruits, seeds, berries, bark or dried leafs, which add a pungent, spicy or fragrant flavour during the cooking process. Although ground spices are readily available, in general it is always best to use whole spices and grind them to order when needed. Spices develop their flavour best when heated, be it by simply toasting them in the oven ahead of the usage or by roasting/sautee them in little oil at the start of the cooking process. Spices are also valued for their medicinal purposes and are deeply rooted in religious rituals of various religions for centuries. They are also used in the production of perfumes and fragrances.
