Spritzer

A.K.A Wine Spritzer, Schorle Spritzers are refreshing drinks, made by adding soda or other carbonated soft drinks to wine, fruit wines, juices or even beer. Contrary to long drinks which blend hard liquers with various beverages or juices, spritzers are thirst quenching drinks with low(er) alcohol content, perfect for outdoor parties and barbecues. In summer, spritzers are a welcome relieve from the heat and due to the “watered down alcohol level” can be consumed in larger quantities that wine. The word spritzer (German) means as much as sprinkle, squirt, spray or to inject/infuse with a needle and the world Schorle is the French term for the equivalent drink. In general Spritzers are ordered either plain or sour (carbonated soda and white wine) or sweet in which case the wine is mixed with a soft drink such as sprite. They can be made with white or red wine, although white wine is more popular. Other popular variations include the “Radler” (cyclist) which combines beer with carbonated lemonade like sprite, “Apfelwein”(apple wine) with lemonade and cider and “Apfelschorle” (apple schorle) lemonade and apple juice. The are also a host of combinations such a beer and coke, wheat beer and lemonade etc. Any juice, fruit wine or fruit nectar can be “g(e)spritzt” (made to a spritzer) by adding a carbonated drink of choice. A host of international companies are selling bottled spritzers combining various juices such as cranberry, strawberry and elderberry with carbonated soft drinks.
